Seven years ago today, Senator Claire McCaskill confirmed that she had billed taxpayers for political travel, a violation Congressional Ethics Rules. Millionaire Claire billed taxpayers almost $76,000 for travel that included 89 flights on her private plane, before reimbursing the Treasury Department following the revelation.
Since the scandal, McCaskill upgraded planes and voiced her out-of-touch belief that the average taxpayer could foot the bill for their own private planes, stating that she thinks “normal people” could afford them:
QUESTIONER: “That’s one thing that the United States has that nobody else has is the freedom to fly around and be affordable where a normal person can afford it.”
SEN. CLAIRE McCASKILL: “Will you remind that when they come after me for my husband’s plane? That normal people can afford it.”
