Senator Claire McCaskill (D-MO) is setting herself to be seen as a massive government funding hypocrite. All indications show that Senator McCaskill will join with far-left Senators like Elizabeth Warren, Bernie Sanders, and Kamala Harris and vote to block a government funding bill today.
If Senator McCaskill votes to block a government funding bill, she will be directly contradicting comments she herself made in 2013. Back then, she said that people who put ideological considerations above funding the government were “dysfunctional deadbeats” who were “[throwing] tantrums” and were playing a “very dangerous game” with our democracy:
“I’m hopeful that they will help us reach a resolution on this that will not only allow the government to reopen, that we will quit playing the very dangerous game of saying to the rest of the world that we’re not the united states of America anymore, we’re not the grandest and most glorious democracy ever created. we are dysfunctional deadbeats. Because if it gets to be Thursday and we have not gotten this wrapped up, the rest of the country is going to see us, see this democracy as dysfunctional, the democracy that so many other countries have tried to copy and emulate because we’ve always managed to work it out. To me, that is the saddest part of this whole thing, is that we’re actually playing around with the essence of what makes our country great, and that is our democracy, our ability to compromise, our ability to negotiate, our ability to not throw tantrums and say we either get our way or we shut the place down.”
Senator McCaskill’s hypocrisy is staggering. She has a chance though to do the right thing. She must vote to put Missouri families and veterans above the Democratic Party’s ideological demands. Unless she does that though, she will be turning her back on the people she’s vowed to serve.
