What They Are Saying: President Trump Visits Missouri, Praises Hawley

Yesterday, President Trump visited St. Louis to attend a business roundtable on tax reform at Boeing and to fundraise for Missouri Attorney General and U.S. Senate candidate Josh Hawley. The President praised Hawley and the “fantastic job” he is doing:

“Great place–place that was very good to me–the State of Missouri was very good to me. I think Josh is doing a fantastic job. I can tell you that he is working hard, just met him at the plane.”

President Trump’s Missouri visit and praise of Hawley drew a great deal of attention, being recognized by local and national media outlets:

Jeff Flock, Fox Business:

“As you point out in addition to the CEO roundtable they will do here behind me somewhere, he will be stumping at a fundraiser for Josh Hawley, a fellow running for Claire McCaskill’s seat. The President has been out in front supporting him. Josh Hawley I would point out to you, Trish, got more votes, in the wake of this whole presidential, or this whole seat battle in Pennsylvania, Josh Hawley got more votes in Presidential election for Attorney General than Trump got here in Missouri for President.”

Chuck Raasch, St. Louis Post-Dispatch:

“Trump is coming to the St. Louis region to meet with business leaders at Boeing Co. and to raise money for Attorney General Josh Hawley, who is running for the GOP nomination to take on McCaskill. McConnell’s Senate Leadership Fund super PAC has already run anti-McCaskill ads in the state, and is expected to be one of several big-money outside groups spending heavily the re-election bid of the Democrat McCaskill. McCaskill voted against the tax cuts passed by Republicans in Congress and signed into law by Trump, a vote that Hawley and other Republicans running to oppose McCaskill in the November elections have already highlighted. The issue is shaping up as a major difference between McCaskill and whomever the Republicans nominate in August primaries.”

Celeste Bott, St. Louis Post-Dispatch:

“Trump also showered praise on Missouri Attorney General Josh Hawley, a Republican who this week kicked off his campaign to unseat U.S. Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Mo., in a nationally watched Senate race. ‘Josh is doing a fantastic job, I can tell you that. He’s working hard,’ Trump said. Hawley was on hand at St. Louis Lambert International Airport earlier in the afternoon to greet Trump as he disembarked Air Force One”

Jo Mannies and Jason Rosenbaum, St Louis Public Radio:

“Hawley greeted Trump, and a large crowd of supporters, when he landed at St. Louis Lambert Airport on Wednesday afternoon. He spent time shaking hands and signing autographs for people who gathered at the airport.”

Melinda Henneberger, Kansas City Star:

“This year’s likely GOP nominee is a well-spoken professor of constitutional law, and he could compete on the issues in a state that favors his positions over [McCaskill’s].”

Emily Jashinsky, Washington Examiner

“McCaskill is considered to be one of the Senate’s most vulnerable incumbents, facing re-election in a state President Trump won easily. Calling her a “partisan liberal Democrat,” Hawley, who’s set to host Trump at a fundraiser on Wednesday, asserted that McCaskill is the ‘face of Washington’s failure.’”

“It’s the Heartland against the world. And with Hillary Clinton actively insulting voters in places like Missouri and Indiana, belittling their worth compared to blue states, Hawley’s argument is very powerful.”

Noah Bierman and Brian Bennett, Los Angeles Times:

“But in St. Louis on Wednesday, Trump met an enthusiastic crowd of supporters at the airport and shouts of ‘Keep it up!’ when he arrived at a Boeing plant for a roundtable promoting his tax cuts. Missouri Atty. Gen. Josh Hawley, who is among Republicans vying to challenge Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill in November’s midterm election, was among the greeters. Trump singled him out for ‘doing a fantastic job.’”

Peter Doocey, Fox News:

“Josh Hawley a top-tier Republican recruit.”
